Artistic Anatomy: Proportions of the Pelvis

This is an HD video. Click through to youtube and watch it large.

Some people approximate the pelvis as two disks. Others compare it to a bowl. Still others use a box. None of the approximations is exactly right. As Glenn Vilppu puts it, 'The best thing is to just learn the shape of the pelvis.'

I'm using a box as a means of locating the major landmarks of the pelvis in order to better study the artistic anatomy of the skeleton.

I have been tackling this problem for the longest time. You are the first person I've come across who is similarly bent on mastering the pelvis.

In my own studies, the focus is on being able to draw it, correctly proportioned, from any angle. So I've tried, and then discarded, a number of approaches.

I'm still at it.

Please keep us informed as to your own progress. If I have any breakthroughs, I'll share them with you.

I keep revisiting it and then moving on to other things. I think I'm pretty close to 'feeling' it now, and for me the key is finding landmarks within the volume of a box.

When I feel comfortable drawing the pelvis from any angle from memory, I feel the other muscles and surrounding bones will come together not too far behind that.

I'll drop you a line when I move forward, and look forward to your progress.
